How a Patient Advocate Works

A CHAI Patient Advocate coaches and guides you how to navigate the Canadian healthcare system and help you feel empowered during your interactions with medical professionals.

Getting Started

The first step is to reach out. CHAI is commonly contacted by the patient, family, caregiver, or medical provider.

Contact us through the website, email, phone or instant chat/messaging. We offer a 15-minute initial consultation, which you can book online from our website.

Initial Consultation & Next Steps

The initial consultation will be with a CHAI patient advocate, either in person, by phone, or via Skype/Zoom. During this appointment, you have the opportunity to explain your situation. Then we will explore and agree on what services are needed.  

A Working Agreement is signed between you and your CHAI patient advocate, your payment is made and the work begins.

Working With Your Patient Advocate

Your current circumstances will determine what happens next and in what direction the work takes.

You will be guided to either complete a case assessment with your advocate or you might need to move right into crisis management if there is a pressing situation currently happening.

There will be regular communication and ongoing meetings/ work with your patient advocate. You will receive updates on how your advocate’s time is being used and will always know how your money is being spent.

We are guided by your needs. We work closely with you to help navigate the health-care system and get you the care you need and deserve.

Our advocates are experts at crisis management and can support you for as long as you need their help.
